A glass recycling plant processes 100,000 tons per year.
The contamination operation takes place in the middle of the process. A wear plate is considered consumed after 30% wear.
By using wear plates of HBW hardness, the annual consumption will amount to about 20 tons. That means 3 tons of steel are added to the glass, an equivalent to 30 g / ton.
When using wear plates of 500 HBW hardness, the consumption is reduced to 10 tons. Thus 1.5 tons are added in the process, which corresponds to 15 g / ton.
For glass recycling, a high degree of purity of the processing material is required. Wear plates made of ceramic or steel are prone to become contaminated. Changing from a lighter steel to Hardox 500 reduces contamination by 90%.
